BLACK HOMAGE – SUMMERTIME

SUMMERTIME
 SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME

REMEMBER THOSE DAYS OF SUMMERTIME FUN,

SIPPING ON THOSE PLASTIC CUPS OF COLD LEMONADE?

REMEMBER LOOKING ALL COOL IN THOSE SHADES,

AND THE LADY DOWN THE STREET SELLING HER FREEZE POPS?

ON REALLY HOT DAYS YOU MADE THEM YOURSELF.

REMEMBER YOU COULD’NT WAIT TO GO TO THE COMMUNITY POOL?

FORGET THE POOL, ON HOT, HOT, DAYS YOU RAN THROUGH THE SPRINKLERS.

YOU DID’NT REALLY CARE ABOUT THE CLOTHES, HECK, YOU JUST WANTED TO GET WET.

SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME.

REMEMBER YOU COULDN’T WAIT FOR AUNTIE,

UNCLE JOE, AND THE GANG TO GET IN TOWN?

THEN, SOON AFTERWARDS, YOU COULDN’T WAIT

FOR THEM TO LEAVE?

YOU AND KIDS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

WOULD GO DOWN THE STREET

WITH ALLOWANCES YOU EARNED

TO BUY SOME CANDY FROM THE LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD STORE,

AND THE STORE WAS INSIDE SOMEONE’S LIVING ROOM.

SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME.

REMEMBER WHEN YOU DID’NT HAVE A  REAL VACATION?
YOUR MOM AND DAD WOULD PACK KOOL-AIDE AND SANDWICHES.
THEN, THEY’D TAKE YOU AND THE FAMILY TO THE LOCAL STATE PARK ,

THE VACATION WAS FUN-  BECAUSE YOU GOT AWAY FROM HOME.

SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME, SUMMERTIME.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE TIMES OF THE YEAR

  1. This is your poetry? I am writing a book right now “Inside The Forbidden Outside”. There are chapters on Jamie’s blog. It is the story of a black man who is in prison. He is the father of one of my grandsons. It is based on the hundreds of letters we’ve shared in ten years and things he’s written to me so I have history of his childhood. One of the chapters, “Jamie’s Story” is about being a kid and he talked about the picnics his mother packed for her four children and the would go to the zoo and feed the ducks or go to the fireworks. He was musing on his memories. This picture reminds me of his story and a part of his life he enjoys remembering. I wrote a post awhile ago – an inmate only has his memories. He has 7 years to go. His family has not been supportive of him. He has a big family and they just let him go. I became “Mom” I have 4 grandchildren who are mixed race – one Hispanic and 3 black. My family will never again be “white”. Maybe we will get over being racist one day when there are more mixed race people. Then nobody can claim to be more privileged than the other.

    1. Yes, all the writings are my original work. I appreciate you reading them. It sounds like your book is potentially interesting and informative. I wish you much success. My sentiments are as yours, no one can claim to be more privileged. I suggest you read a writing of mine posted here that speaks to what you are saying. It is entitled, Liberty and Justice for All. I look forward to and hope in this lifetime we will have more substance than looking at the surface of skin color and practice a higher level of thinking, such as seeing the character of individuals as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., eloquently proposed.
